"For the five days that I spent in Kyiv, it has been quiet and blooming. Subway, where you wait for 40 minutes for a train to arrive, but appreciate it more than ever. There are lines in shops, and people are buying Easter cakes (paskha). In front of the building, where a bomb landed, the post office works stoically. Even a pizza place has opened for take-out. Kyiv city council says that 40% of restaurants have started working. Kind of a game into a peaceful life.

But as soon as you enter Zhytomyrska highway, you see the price that has been paid for this ‘peace’. You see that nearby cities and villages amortized the blast. There are hundreds of ruined and burnt houses only on the highway. There are tanks and burnt cars that have not been taken yet. There are shelled maternity homes, restaurants, and shops.

Am I going to be able to read without irony all those gothic, romantic novels, works of beatniks, that I liked? What about all those guides by western business coaches, New York Times bestsellers, and books on crisis management, and how to overcome depression?
Maybe now is the time I understand better all that infernally dark literature, that was written by Ukrainian authors before us. It does not seem to be artificially concentrated on the miseries anymore. On the contrary, it is what helps me to abide by the terrors and pain of today. Our generation has probably been the first one to look back and talk about traumas out loud.

But we have just started and there are so many things that have not been said. And now there is another fresh brutal layer that will probably stay with us forever. I do not think we are going to be able to go through it in our lifetime."

"5 днів, що була в Києві, спокійно, квітуче. Метро, якого чекаєш по 40 хвилин, але й цінуєш більше. У чергах у супермаркетах люди розкуповують паски; навпроти будинку, куди прилетіло, стоїчно працює "Нова пошта". І навіть піцерія відкрилася на виніс, у КМДА кажуть, що 40% ресторанного бізнесу вже запрацювало. Така собі гра у мирне життя.

І тільки виїжджаєш на Житомирську трасу, і бачиш, якою ціною це все далося, який удар взяли на себе ближні села й містечка. Сотні зруйнованих і спалених будинків тільки по трасі, ще не прибрані танки й згорілі авто, розстріляні пологові, ресторації, супермаркети.

Чи колись я зможу сприймати без іронії готичні, романтичні романи, бітників, яких так любила, ці всі порадники західних бізнес-ковчів, бестселери "Нью-Йорк Таймз" і книжечки про антикризовий менеджемент і долання депресії?

Можливо, зараз краще розумію цю всю пекельно чорну літературу, яку писали українські письменники до нас. І вона вже не видається такою штучно згущеною і сконцентрованою на стражданнях – навпаки, саме вона допомагає пережити біль сьогоднішній. Наше ж покоління – чи не перше почало оглядатися назад і проговорювати травми вголос.

Ми ж лише почали, і скільки всього лишилося несказанним, і ось накрило свіжим грубим шаром, який із нами вже, напевне, так і зостанеться. І його пропрацювати нам навряд чи вдасться за своє життя."
