"Сьогодні приїхав Сєвєродонецьк. Безліч родин, величезний, буквально напханий до стелі потяг. Багато хто з біженців одразу казав: "Ми з Сєвєродонецька, вибачте, можна чаю?" Але вразило не це. Вразило те, як сильно їм хочеться солодкого. Вони клали по три столові ложки цукру у невеликий стаканчик чаю. Питали про печиво. Просили один кексик. Майже кожен. Ми їмо солодке, коли нам страшно. Якщо не знаємо, коли наступного разу буде їжа, тож потрібні калорії. Ми їмо солодке, бо хочемо повернутися у безпечний час дитинства, коли над головою не літали ракети. У нас вистачить тут цукру на весь Сєвєродонецьк, на Маріуполь і на Херсон. Тільки приїжджайте, будь ласка."

"IDPs from Severodonetsk showed up today. Countless families on a huge train, literally packed to the rafters.
Many of the people immediately said: “We’re from Severodonetsk. Excuse us, can we have some tea?”
But that’s not what struck me. I was amazed at how much they wanted something sweet. They would put three tablespoons of sugar into a small cup of tea. They asked for cookies. They asked for a single cupcake. Almost every one of them.
We eat sweets when we’re scared. If we don’t know when our next meal might come, we need calories. We eat sweet stuff because we want to return to the safer days of our childhood, when shells weren’t flying overhead.
We have enough sugar here for all of Severodonetsk, Mariupol and Kherson. Please, just come here."
