Writing from the War project collection consists of testimonials of Ukrainians about their experiences of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Writing from the War is a volunteer project aimed at collecting, preserving, and disseminating such testimonials. Documenting testimonials (texts, videos, and photographs) will provide the world audience with a panoramic, firsthand picture of the Ukrainian tragedy and allow those affected by it to be heard. This collection is an important research source for historians, culturologists, philosophers, political scientists, and students, as well as a source of inspiration for artists throughout the world.
These firsthand testimonials were transmitted to the project team from various hiding places; from shelters, train stations, and refugee camps; from besieged cities. There are testimonials by soldiers, volunteers, doctors, drivers, teachers, animal rights activists, cooks, artists, and scientists – people of all professions; by adults and children, displaced persons, rescuers and the rescued – in short, anyone interested in sharing their experience with the world. This is a panoramic picture of the wartime “everyday,” reflecting private experiences during this catastrophe. All the testimonials were provided to the project team by the witnesses themselves, and every story has a title, and a record of the person behind it.
