"I don't know exactly how many canaries I have. Today I cleaned the cage and one got out. However, two days ago some chicks hatched. This means that life goes on! I boiled eggs for them today, because chicks need eggs. I bring them grass. I love it! I have loved it since childhood.
My windows were broken on the first or second day. The most difficult was when the temperature in the apartment became -20. I have a basin there. I put something burning in the kitchen and burned chairs. I warmed the water a little for the birds, and I myself lay dressed under blankets. I filled my bathtub with water. It froze. The aquarium with fish froze. The water in the toilet also froze. I had a lot of fish and a lot of beautiful plants… everything froze.
You ask if it was scary when they bombed. Do you think I’m a Hero of the Soviet Union?-- Of course it was scary. But I did not run to the basement. When there were still neighbours, everyone knew that I was a colonel. Perhaps they would be more frightened if they saw the colonel running to the basement.”

Уже в перші дні повномасштабної війни будинок чоловіка залишився без опалення, світла та вікон. Коли в березні морози стали сильнішими, у квартирі чоловіка замерз навіть акваріум.
"Я точно не знаю, скільки в мене канарок. Сьогодні чистив клітку, то одна вилетіла. А от два дні тому пташенята вилупились. Це значить, що життя триває! Я їм сьогодні яйця варив, бо пташенятам треба яйця. Траву ходжу їм рву. Люблю я це! Люблю з дитинства. Вікна в мене вилетіли на перший чи другий день. Найважче було, коли у квартирі температура стала мінус 20. Он таз у мене стоїть. Я ставив на кухні що-небудь, що горить, і палив стільці. Трохи нагрівав воду, щоби напоїти пташок, а сам одягнений лягав під ковдри. У ванній у мене вода була налита спеціально. Замерзла. Акваріум із рибами замерз. Вода в туалеті теж замерзла. У мене було багато риб і рослин багато, красивих таких… Усе замерзло. Ви питаєте, чи страшно було, коли бомбили. Я ж хіба герой Радянського Союзу? Звісно страшно. Але в підвал не бігав. Сусіди ж ще поки були тут, усі знали, що я полковник. Може, й самі більше злякались би, якби побачили, що полковник у підвал бігає".
