English translation (unedited):
"Optimists don’t pack anxious bags. They believe that there has to be a real basis for craziness.
I’m choosing my words very freely for a person at whose windows projectiles are flying. I’m leaving over toys and books, reading over old letters. Letters that are eighty years old. This is my entire inheritance from grandma Tanya. The letters of her lover Andriy from World War II. He wrote about the war which devours youth and beauty. About the sounds of trains, which race to the unknown. The warmth of embraces and the tenderness of kisses, which he missed.
It’s so wonderful to think of my grandmother as tender and sensual. What's amazing is not that she’s my grandmother but that the war changed her. It froze her. It hardened her for survival. Grandma had two civil unions: for it was time, for it was necessary. But she had only one love and the war took him away. Grandma ordered two portraits: hers and Andrei’s, and took them everywhere with her and hung them above her bed. She told her husbands that it was her brother. Before her death only one thing consoled her: her faith in meeting her love.
Why did she live in the past? Couldn’t she let it go and love those nearby? Why did she need this memory? It seems like grandma wanted to preserve herself and her loved one as they were before the war: full of light, generous, tender. It seems like they had been very emotionally close. It seems like this was her way of being in touch with herself. I’m packing the letters and the anxious suitcase. Maybe today, during the first day of war, I would find some sort of an answer in them? Maybe I’ll understand my grandmother? Maybe I would be successful in remaining tender? But would the world be in need of tenderness when all is said and done?"
